Google Apps

02/19/2007

I have become increasingly disappointed in my .Mac membership over the last few months. I'm having problems getting emails delivered to me on time, and also experiencing several issues with my iCal synchronization.

Because of this, I have been looking around at several ways to consolidate my emails, and perhaps start using my theorythree account instead. I've come across several options, and one promising one is Google Apps.

Google Apps allows you to tack on several services to a domain you own or control. For example, you can add a calendar service by simply registering the domain, logging into your handy-dandy Google Apps interface and turning on the service. It's a snap. You can also add email service in with the same snappiness. Once activated, you can add, edit and delete user account with an offering of up to 2GB of email space for each user.

It does have its drawbacks, most notably the lack of IMAP support for email and it's generic Google look and feel. I doubt anyone would be fooled into believing it's an application run off of the host domain. Still, one can't complain about the price tag, after all it is free while in beta.

I doubt this will be a long-term solution to my email and calendar issues, but for now, I'll take it.
