Simplicity seems simple, but as I began to plan for the third major release of this site, I found the need to simplify, well, complicated.
There was the matter of managing the code, but first came the design revamp. I had a simple idea, columns. Several iterations later I wasn't happy how the columns turned out, so I scrapped the entire design and opted for a much cleaner looking all black site.
I know what you're thinking, black is hardly a design scheme. Well, point of fact, you're wrong - it is. Black (or reversed) sites are quite popular as portfolio websites because the lack of coloring prevents the site from conflicting with the featured artwork or photography. For that same reason, I felt comfortable using the simplified layout and deferring from all other color considerations.
Drawbacks of an all black website with white text have long since been overcome. Previously, browsers had a hard time printing such a combination, because reverse printing meant using up toner or ink to reproduce the reversed effect.
The solution to this, and many other problems, is of course CSS. Simply creating an alternate CSS file that manages the printing styles will allow me to override my screen color (or lack there of) choices and revert back to a more traditional white background with black text.
Go ahead, print this page, you'll see what I mean, it shows up just as you would expect. I've even added content to the pint-only version of this site.
